Gopher: The precursor to the World Wide Web. The name came from "go for". Gopher was the first nice user-interface for the Internet. Before that, there was just the usenet (sometimes called Newsgroups), FTP, and e-mail. Gopher is all but dead, and not every browser supports it. Gopher pages begin with gopher://gopher.mysite.com. Here is an example of a gopher site: gopher://gopher.quux.org/1/.
GSM: Global Systems for Mobile communication. The most popular digital standard in the world. GSM is older and inferior to CDMA. However, GSM has many advantages over CDMA. GSM is an open standard, meaning you do not have to pay licensing costs. GSM uses a SIM card, which is a memory card that stores who you are and some phone numbers. Because in Europe where GSM is the only standard, GSM phones do not have analog capabilities. They are not needed in Europe like they are in the US. In the US, you will have more digital coverage with GSM than CDMA. There is no reliability difference between GSM and CDMA, despite what the ads say. GSM is used by AT&T wireless and T-Mobile as well as most of the smaller carriers. Future iterations of GSM use GPRS, EDGE, W-CDMA (also called UMTS), and HSPDA, HSUPA. You do not need to know these acronyms, but when used they will always be on GSM compatible phones.
